UEFA Europa League: Legia 3-1 SV Ried
In the second leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round Legia’s footballers defeated 3-1 their rivals from Austria and won the promotion to the final, play-off round. Warsaw players had to make up for the 1-2 defeat which they suffered in Ried im Innkreis a week ago.
The game abounded with great emotions and although footballers from the capital of Poland dominated their opponents most of the time, they had to fight for the final victory until the end of the match.
Legia scored its first goal a few minutes before the break. Danijel Ljuboja, who intercepted the ball, passed it into the penalty area and Marek Saganowski sent it to the Austrian net with a header. This has been his fourth goal in European games this season. After the first half Legia was leading 1-0.
Though this result was enough to win the promotion, Warsaw players didn’t want to concentrate on their defence. In the fifty-fifth minute Danijel Ljuboja “whipped” the ball, entered the penalty area and passed it to Miroslav Radović, who scored the second goal for Legia. It seemed that after this goal SV Ried’s footballers had no inclination to fight for the qualification to the next round.
About ten minutes later depressed Austrian players lost their third goal. Radović passed the ball to Ljuboja and he lobbed opponents’ goalkeeper.
Twenty minutes before the end of the match Ivica Vrdoljak was punished with the second yellow card by the Israeli referee and had to leave the field. Five minutes later SV Ried struck its catch-up goal. Its author was Robert Žulj. Due to this hit Legia’s footballers had to be very watchful concerning their defence. If they had lost another goal, then Austrian players would have been promoted to the play-off round. Fortunately, Dušan Kuciak didn’t let that happen.
